　　作为第一摄影师使用闪光灯 ，雅各布里斯被认为是一个先驱摄影 。
　　
　　大部分移民到美国来都是为了发财，1870年21岁的雅各布-里斯从丹麦移居到美国寻出路。从那时起，通过对照相机使用的革新，里斯已成为全国社会改革运动的鼓舞者。

里斯作为一名纽约报纸的警察记者开始了他的事业生涯。他那尖锐的文章和令人震惊的照片于1890年发表《另一半人怎样生活》而达到顶点。这本书根据大量记实材料描述了“纽约贫民窟肮脏的核心”–这些肮脏的地区正像土匪的栖息处和盗贼常出没的胡同一样–引起了轰动，也赢得了西奥多-罗斯福的友谊和各地改革者的尊敬。里斯多年后发表的《与贫民窟的斗争》报道了城市住屋改革的过程。在各种意义上说里斯是个开辟者，他创建了住宅区并在1901年以他的名字而命名。他无情地警告他的同胞们“不能让人像猪一样生活……我们不必等待太平盛世来摆脱贫民窟。我们现在就能够做。”今天里斯去世了，贫民窟依然存在。
